Who participates in One Homeless Night?
Host organizations from across Canada are organizations
that work directly with the homeless. They are Christ-centered,
non-denominational, full-time registered charities.
Groups that participate in One Homeless Night are
made up of adventurous, compassionate people who are interested
in heightening their awareness with regards to the issue of homelessness.

What is One Homeless Night?
One Homeless Night is a ministry of Crossroads Christian
Communications, best known for its daily television program, 100
Huntley Street.
One Homeless Night began with an eight-year-old boy, David-Peter,
son of Reynold and Kathy Mainse. He saw a homeless person
and was deeply moved and overcome with compassion. He was
compelled to do something; he wanted to understand and experience
what it was like to be homeless, if even just for a night.
Within one week of his encounter, he raised over $4,000 for three
organizations working with homelessness in his hometown of Hamilton,
Ontario. He had his two sisters and parents join him for one "homeless"
night on the street. During December 12-16, 2005, 100 Huntley
Street had a five-day telethon called "Homeless at Home".

Where does One Homeless Night occur?
There are three available options:

1. ON THE STREET-OVERNIGHT:

Time is spent in the homeless organization's facilities and
also on a guided tour of the streets.

2. ON THE STREET-DAYTIME:

This encounter will take place at the organization and may involve
a guided tour of the streets. It will be a volunteer opportunity
for the group.

3. IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD:

This undertaking will take place in the group's chosen facility
(i.e. church/school, etc.) with a representative visiting from
a local ministry that works with the homeless.

|
When does One Homeless Night occur?
It occurs every weekend during the month of October, "Thanksgiving
month". There will be expansion throughout the calendar
year as participation in the movement of One Homeless Night
increases or participants feel a different month works better
with their group schedule.

Why have One Homeless Night?
RAISED AWARENESS: Having an experience like One
Homeless Night enlightens an individual/group on the plight
of the homeless. The participant has a realization that may
help them to be more mindful and appreciative of this increasing
need and hopefully it will foster more future involvement.
RAISED FUNDING: Participants get pledges that go directly
to the organization. They are also encouraged to participate
in group fundraisers.
BUILD PARTNERSHIPS: It is our desire that strong,
sustainable partnerships be developed between participating
groups and the local organizations they get to know through
One Homeless Night. Developing partnerships would offer
more prayer support, a greater volunteer base and ongoing
financial aid for the organizations.

How does One Homeless Night work?
Logistics: A team/group of people with a desire
to have the One Homeless Night experience is paired
with a local organization that would like to host them.
Past: In 2005, the One Homeless Night pilot
project was launched successfully. In 2006, there was representation
from twenty-five hosts across Canada and eighteen participating
groups.
