HIV and AIDS
statistics for Africa as of end 2006, compared to the rest of the
world

James
1:27, "Religion that God our father accepts as pure
and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their
distress..."
Overview
Crossroads has engaged in the fight against AIDS through partnerships
in Africa that care for the orphans and widows affected by this
devastating pandemic.
The HIV virus tends to hit women and children the hardest, leaving
them orphaned, widowed, or infected themselves. Nearly 12 million
African children are HIV orphans in the sub-Saharan region alone.
Many of these children are infected themselves (90% of the world's
HIV infected children are living in sub-Saharan Africa).
Zambia is among those countries that are considered to have an
extremely 'High HIV Prevalence Rate'. The
Lazarus Project in Zambia shelters the orphan and empowers the
widow (or poverty stricken woman) with agricultural & skills
training. Crossroads continues to work with this project, strengthening
its ability to make a difference in the lives of street youth, and
impact the issue of poverty in the Lusaka area.
Also in Zambia, Crossroads partners with Visionledd
to strengthen HIV/AIDS care and treatment projects.
As
in the rest of the continent, Kenya is also feeling the impact of
this devastating disease. Here, we continue to work with the Mully
Children's Family (MCF) in order to bring hope to the abandoned
or orphaned child. HIV education and care is an integral part of
the MCF program. The issues of HIV and poverty are interwoven with
one another, as they impact the lives of MCF children. There is
rarely a child that hasn't felt the impact of this disease at some
level, whether by loosing a parent or friend, or simply by being
plunged into the poverty that results from the impact of this disease.
