Since 1962, Norma-Jean Mainse has been in people’s homes bringing the love of God through Crossroads and 100 Huntley Street. Before turning 80 this August, I invited her home to our studio…
LD: I want to know how you fuel yourself to keep so vibrant?
NJ: Well, you get in the presence of God every day, read His Word, and trust what the Word says! “The joy of the Lord,” the Bible says, “is my strength,” and I feel that. If we have an attitude of gratitude, you know, just be happy and not allow yourself to be in a negative mood. Enjoy the presence of the Lord, enjoy your family and what God has done for you. It’s a privilege to live for Him.
LD: Self-talk is really important to you.
NJ: Don’t allow negative thoughts to be at your mind all the time. The enemy would like to discourage us, put us down and think of things the Lord wouldn’t want.
LD: David Mainse taught us to go through the Bible daily in his 100 Words blog. What’s your Bible reading routine?
NJ: I find at midnight when I’m all alone, no one is phoning me, I’m quiet with the Lord and I feel I get strength. He speaks to me and He gives me such peace. It’s an honour to know that He said He would never leave us or forsake us. He’s always with us.
LD: It was September 2017 when your dear husband David went to be with the Lord. How are you coping?
NJ: We had just celebrated our 59th wedding anniversary in the hospital and then he passed away a week after that. I know where he is, he wanted to be with Jesus.
LD: But he was a big force, how did you deal with the loneliness?
NJ: I’m surrounded by a big family; four children, 16 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren. I’m never bored. I love to be around them. I love to have fun. I keep going back to Nehemiah 8:10 “Do not sorrow for the joy of the Lord is my strength.” I’ve held onto that and I’ve proved it to be true. His joy is resident in my heart and in my life and I just want other people to know about the joy of the Lord because He’s there for them. There are lots of people going through struggles but if they turn their life over to Jesus, and just say, “I’m yours Lord and I trust you, that you are going to bring me through this situation, whatever it is,” He is faithful to do that.
LD: Norma-Jean Mainse our co-founder, over 10 million people have called the prayer lines that you and David started. Thank you, we love you.
